What a wonderful age!! I have been missing out! I must say, I do miss my kinder babies, but I have truly enjoyed getting to know my new class!
So just a little heads up, I got this job two days before in service and it’s obviously a NEW grade, so to say I felt a little unprepared was an understatement. But I did a lot of studying and a LOT of blog stalking and I feel like my first week went really well!!
Here’s a peak!
Here’s a peak!
We loved starting out with Read to Self!
We also read First Day Jitters and my students loved it. It was such a great story!
After we read it we read the poem together from Abby’s Super in Second packet! We cut it out and glued it into our poetry journals. We circled the sight words and read it to a friend!
Then of course, we had to make Jitter Juice!!
Then of course, we had to make Jitter Juice!!
We read the poem together (which is adorable). Then we tasted our “jitter juice” and the butterflies just flew away!!
Then we took a survey to see how many students liked it and how many didn’t like it.
It was such a great activity to get to know everyone and get out the “first day jitters” thanks Abby!

We also made these super cute “My Favorite Things Snapshots” from The Bubbly Blonde’s, Savvy Second Grade Fun packet! These came out sooooo cute! They line our hallway and they are so bright and colorful and they are a great way to learn more about my kiddos! This packet also has a ton of first week stuff, including a little What I Did This Summer writing page!
Thanks Alisha!
We also dug into math using Amy’s adorable unit, Let’s Get Started! It has a ton of great beginning of the year math activities for second grade! We started by writing what we know about math and what we want to learn about math in our journals.
Then we made these super cute “mathematicians” pics to come!
We also started our math this year with touch points!! I just love teaching this concept because it is brilliant!! I still use it!! Read more about it here. Or check out my math pinterest board for lots of ideas!
Once I introduced the concept we wrote the numbers with the points in our journals, then we made flashcards. Then I had them break up into pairs to put the fuzzies on the numbers 1-5.
The kiddos loved doing this and it was a great visual!
I just LOVED my first week in second grade and I know it’s going to be a GREAT year! Stay tuned for more of what we’re doing in grade 2!!
Your week looked great! I will be stopping by a lot now that I know you are in 2nd!! I was hired the night before our in services before school! I am loving it though! :)
