Happy Friday friends! I hope you are finishing out your school year happily and stress free ( I know, kind of impossible). But just keep the end in sight, there is light at the end of the tunnel! It’s called SUMMER!!
Well, I have had the beginning in sight. Yup, that’s right beginning of the school year. So I wanted to share with you my TOP 5 MUST HAVES for my classroom.
This could be different for everyone but I wanted to share mine so you could see a different point of view! So, here it goes!
one.
My classroom rug!
This has seriously been the best investment I my dad has made for me and my classroom! Here’s me opening my Christmas present! Seriously, like a kid right!
And yes, I’m wearing my new Cowboy jersey OVER my dress. That’s what you do at Christmas right?
I started out my first year with a cute & colorful, swirly rug that matched my room, and boy did I learn my lesson! I had kiddos in each other’s “bubble”, kids sitting next to kids that were not good together and I couldn’t assign seats because there were no “spaces”. So I tried the good ol’ velcro with their names on it…. um no. They would get moved around accidently and get stuck to shoes and clothes. It was not ideal. I even tried colored duct tape and no luck. So my amazing dad got me this beautiful rug that I had been begging for that year and my classroom management changed forever!
I’m not saying you can’t classroom manage without a rug with spaces or spots, I’m just saying it worked best for me.
two.
My second favorite thing in my classroom was book boxes!!! I had gone through dollar store book boxes, Target book boxes and I finally invested in some good, sturdy book boxes from Really Good Stuff last year and I could not be happier! First, are my students browsing book boxes. They shop for books every Monday and I usually put a guided reading book in each box for the week. They are colorful, strong and best of all they have a stabilizer wing so if they put taller books in them, they won’t plop down. I absolutely LOVE them!
Also from Really Good Stuff, I got these little babies for my reading corner. They are sturdy and can hold a ton of books and best of all, the color scheme matches my room!
three.
Storage boxes! I absolutely LOVE these latch box containers. I purchased some for my manipulatives/counters and bigger ones for my unit/themed files!
Oh my word ya’ll, this changed my life!
For real!
But here’s a quick overview….
I used to have a giant ugly filing cabinet to store all of my unit stuff. And it looked like this!
Yuck, right?!
I could not take it another year. So, I invested in these little guys and they rocked my socks off!
They are perfect size for my file folders ziplock baggies with samples and plenty more!
I also got these smaller ones for my counters!
I LOOOOOVE how they are easy to get to, easy to open (for my kidlets) and they match the other boxes!
This was a bit of an investment but I spread out the cost so it wasn’t all at once and voila, they look amazing!
Now, here’s what my cabinet looks like!
Now, here’s what my cabinet looks like!
A must have for sure!
Oh, by the way, if you like these labels they will be free in my store until Sunday night!
Go get ‘em now!!
four.
Fabric for bulletins!! How many of you invest on good, cute fabric for your bulletins?
Well, if you don’t…. you should! Just try it for one or two and you will see how much you will LOVE it!
Well, if you don’t…. you should! Just try it for one or two and you will see how much you will LOVE it!
I started doing this my first year because I had such a specific theme that I didn’t want to use the dull colors of butcher paper. I bought most of the fabric at Hobby Lobby or Joan’s fabric (using my teacher discount woohoo) and that set me up for a good 3 years and counting!
And here’s a good tip one of my teammates told me about! If you have a big space to fill (like your word wall) just buy a twin size sheet and there you go! Super cheap, super easy fabric for bulletins! Here are some photos!
Sorry so blurry, but it’s a polka dot colored fabric with the awesome Cupcake for the Teacher’s writing center!
five.
And last but not least my ipod shuffles for listening station!
We used to use cd players with cd’s, but how old school is that?! Just kidding… kinda.
I found myself constantly being interrupted in my guided reading groups due to “broken” cd players, the batteries were out, the cd was skipping or they forgot which button to press, etc. I would even put stickers on the buttons for stop and start but the kids got so confused sometimes!
So we got some ipod shuffles and this is how we use them.
Each color ipod matches the color book box it goes in. At the beginning of the year I put one book on each ipod and one book in the book box. The students are taught how to use the ipod (which, let’s be honest most of them already knew how). Very easy, start, volume and switch off were the only buttons they really needed. At the end of two weeks I would unplug the ipods, switch out the books and charge them over the weekend. They NEVER needed to be charged more than that, it was something I didn’t have to worry about, ever!
About halfway through the year, once the students really mastered using the ipods and listening to the whole story I added a second book to each box and ipod. This worked for multiple reasons. By this time in the year, our Daily 5 time had expanded a bit so they had more time at the station. It also lasted a week longer since each student didn’t get to each book in two short weeks. And let me just tell ya, this was one of the student’s FAVORITE daily 5 choices very quickly! They just loved cozying up under a table with their head phones on and getting lost in a good book! I loved seeing them enjoy this station!

I am just like you and I LOVE my carpet with spots for each student. I couldn't imagine not having the dots for each student. Thanks for the free labels. I am going to check out those containers you have. My goal for the summer is to organize EVERYTHING in my classroom.

Same here! LOVE my rug. I have the same one you do! My kids have ONE spot and that's their spot! One thing I like to do with that rug is rotate my kids so that the same kid isn't in the back. They rotate colors every day! It's worked wonders on them complaining on where they sit!

Oh man, I would LOVE those iPod shuffles. My listen to reading area is not working out so well right now. Also, those stackable containers are fantastic! I aspire to be as organized as you!

By the way, I also love and need my carpet. It has colored dots for the kids to sit on. I used to have the rug you have, but my principal had it taken out and put in a different room, which made me sad. I liked how big the squares were.

I have to agree with you. My carpet is my #1 item in my classroom. I have 30 K's in my class and we have 30 dots on our rug. But by the time the year is at a close, everyone is sitting together pretty snugly! I also love my elmo - I use it so much.
ReplyDeleteI would love to get the containers that you have. I think I would be much more organized but I am a little overwhelmed about the cost of them for all of our units. Someday, I will take the plunge!

Thank you for the free labels. I plan on using them to organize my centers this summer.
ReplyDeleteI love my carpet with a spot for each person.

Thank you for the free labels. They are wonderful. My #1 like would be the listening center with the ipods. I never gave that a thought as a way to make the center for kid friendly.mernest@wi.rr.com
ReplyDeleteI have the same rug, and I love it too! But I love my big, wide easel/chart stand the best! You know the one, white board on wheels with the tubs underneath. I love the technology of my Promethean Board, but some times I just like the kiddos on the carpet, sharing the pen with me!
ReplyDeleteLove the labels, thanks!

I am like you...my rug was the best thing I ever got. I didn't get it till I had taught 10 years. Anyway, I love the boxes from Really Good Stuff. I AM DESPERATELY wanting them. My file cabinets are worse than yours were. I need some boxes like you have for files. Where did you purchase them at? I want to try Daily 5 this year, I am finding it difficult to change after 19 years, but I know it has to happen. Lol! And one more question, the iPod shuffles, did you just download the cd then put on the shuffle. I am just curious about how after weeks they know how far to ff before they get to the current story. (Sorry that key not make sense) or every two weeks do you just take the previous one off and add the next one?
ReplyDeleteSorry if this is confusing, but I found you blog to be very helpful to me and my organizing adventure. I have been waiting for someone to do it for me, but guess that's not going to happen.
I forgot my email

Thank you all for your comments! I just love hearing from my followers!
ReplyDeleteAshley, I love the idea of rotating squares daily! I might have to try that!
Candy, I purchased them at Wal-Mart (super cheap) and very durable! You will love Daily 5 when you really get into it!! I hope to do a Daily 5 post this summer so check back, you may get some ideas. As far as the shuffles, yes I would just upload the cd onto my itunes then put one book on each ipod at a time. So there was always only ONE book to listen to on each ipod at a time. Hope that helps!

Thanks again friends!

I love all your organizational ideas! As you said, it can be pricey to buy all the containers, but I'm sure it's worth it for your sanity!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great classroom! Glad to hear the book bins work out so well, I just order several sets for my classroom to replace my old ones and wasn't sure they are the perfect kind. Keep up the wonderful work you do!!
ReplyDeleteMy #1 is my individual whiteboards. I can have all the kids working and giving me feedback at the same time. I like to walk around the room with a marker and mark corrections and positive remarks right on their boards.
ReplyDeleteI love all of your must haves! It's like it was me writing that blog! :) (Right down to the Cowboys jersey!)
ReplyDeleteI love love love my iPod shuffles too. It's crazy how quickly those babies are comfortable using it. And it's amazing to not have to help rewind/fast forward/etc like with tapes and CDs. I've usually only put one book on there the whole year, but seeing that your kinders can find the right book with multiple books on there, I'm sure my kiddos can! Thanks for the great idea!
I'm your newest follower and I'd love for you to also check out my blog!
